Exams and Cleanings in Langdon, AB
Exams and Cleanings Near You
Dental exams and professional cleanings are a part of preventative dental care. Cleanings are performed in our office by a licensed hygienist who works to remove excessive buildup from your teeth. The exam is then performed by our general dentist near you, who will thoroughly examine teeth, gums, tongue, airway, and the TMJ as part of the oral exam. We recommend that patients come every six months for a preventive cleaning and exam. For children, it’s a good idea to get them in for their first appointment when you notice their baby teeth coming up through the gums. The overall goal of preventative care is to prevent problems from starting in the first place and to spot issues early on before they progress to infection or pain.
What to Expect During an Appointment
Dental Exam
At Langdon Dental, a routine exam includes assessing the following:
• Worn down or fractured teeth
• Cavities
• Alignment of teeth
• Gums and cheek tissue
An airway and oral cancer screening are also done as part of the exam.
Teeth Cleaning
For the cleaning, a thorough scaling and polishing of your entire smile to eliminate bacteria is performed. This is done via a cavitron (an ultrasonic scaler that uses water and high frequencies) or a traditional scaling instrument. An additional tool that may be utilized is a laser tip to neutralize harmful pathogens that cause gum and bone infections.
Fluoride treatment is usually performed as the final step of the cleaning. Fluoride is a mineral that exists in the earth and, when it’s processed and applied to the teeth, is effective at warding off cavities. It can come as a foam, gel, or mouthwash. It will remain on your smile for a minute; then, you can rinse your mouth.
